I use these nodes for roughly 30 containers doing nearly everything for my Homelab (except NAS) The power usage on these is also extremely low - idle around 5W, under load ~20W. My physical WAN link actually exceeds 1Gbps, however the 8500T CPU varient handles 1Gbps bandwith with ease (granted i've not got any heavy packet inspection going on) I run OPNsense via proxmox on two of them in a HA/failover configuration, both wit the I350's as you mentioned (Dont get the 340 nics if your thinking about it because you will likley want the SR-IOV feature which allows each of the 4 ports to individually be passed through to different VMs) I have three M720Q and thoes little machines are absolute tanks. If your looking for dedicated hardware for just routing/firewall then the Lenovo M720Q are extremely overkill IMO. Has some of you used a small factor PC to turn into a multi NIC router ? If yes could you point me some models, tips or anything of help. It does have a empty "cross" at the back (if no optional port there) but I really don't know how to profit from it. I'm thinking of some Dell Optiplex, actually I can get a 3070 for a decent price but without this multi NIC capability i'm not motivated to buy it. It's hard to say if other brands can do the same, they do have optional rear ports (vga / hdmi / rs232), but i'm not sure those places could host a NIC from there. Around +300€ in total, not really worth it for a no wifi router (i'll think about getting a wifi access point later on). But currently I only find some pricey ones, and the i350 mod also costs a little. Someone from here showed me the Lenovo M720q, which can handle a i350 4x NIC on a PCIe entry. I'd like to build a simple router on a small PC, obviously it will need at least two NIC. I am kindda lost on all the small form factors PC around.ĭell Optiplex, HP elitedesk, lenovo mxxx. r/HomeNetworking - Simpler networking advice. r/pfsense - for all things pfsense ('nix firewall) Might be able to find things useful for a lab. r/hardwareswap - Used hardware, swap hardware. r/buildapcsales - For sales on building a PC r/linux - All flavors of Linux discussion & news - not for the faint of heart!
